The Natural Stone Institute notes that oil stains normally need to be dissolved so the source can be flushed from the stone. Its guidance includes poultices made with an absorbent powder and an agent appropriate for oil-based staining.
For a safer homeowner approach, use a commercially prepared oil-stain poultice labeled for granite. Follow its directions exactly and test it in an inconspicuous area first.
Fresh grease may be easier to remove than oil that has remained in the stone for days. Deep staining may require more than one poultice application.
Coffee, tea, wine, fruit juice, tomato sauce, and other organic substances may leave pink, brown, yellow, or reddish discoloration.

The Natural Stone Institute recommends a poultice for metal staining and cautions that deep rust stains can be extremely difficult to remove completely.
Rust that comes from an embedded fastener, sink component, reinforcement material, or recurring water source should be evaluated professionally. Removing the visible mark without fixing the metal or moisture problem will allow it to return.
Ink, permanent marker, food coloring, cosmetics, and hair dye can create highly visible marks.
The correct treatment depends partly on the granite’s color. Stone-care professionals may use peroxide-based products on certain light stones and solvent-based treatments on darker stones. These products can affect the sealer or finish if used incorrectly.
Begin with a product specifically labeled for ink or dye stains on natural stone. Test it in a hidden area and avoid spreading the product beyond the stain.
Large ink spills, hair dye, unknown dyes, or marks that do not improve after one careful treatment should be handled by a professional.
Biological staining can develop around sinks, backsplashes, outdoor countertops, and other areas that remain damp.
First, address the moisture source. Mold or mildew will return if water continues entering a seam, failed caulk joint, wall, cabinet, or porous surface.
Use a biological cleaner approved for natural stone. Follow its dilution, dwell-time, ventilation, and rinsing instructions. Do not combine cleaning products.
The Natural Stone Institute specifically warns never to mix bleach and ammonia because the combination produces a toxic gas.
Widespread growth, recurring mold, or moisture entering from below the countertop may indicate a plumbing, caulking, cabinet, or installation issue that requires professional attention.
A poultice is used when a stain has moved below the surface, and ordinary cleaning cannot reach it. It consists of a white absorbent material combined with a cleaning agent appropriate for the stain.
Commercial poultices are generally the simplest choice because they provide instructions for the type of stain and stone being treated.
To apply a poultice, first clean the countertop and allow it to dry. Prepare the product according to its instructions, then spread it over the stain in a layer approximately ¼ to ½ inch thick. Extend the material about one inch beyond the visible edge of the stain.
Cover the poultice with plastic and secure the edges as directed. After the recommended covered period, expose the poultice and allow it to dry completely. The drying action is what helps draw the stain into the absorbent material.
Remove the dried poultice with a plastic or wooden scraper. Do not use a metal blade. Rinse the area with distilled water, dry it with a soft cloth, and wait until the granite is completely dry before evaluating the result.
The Natural Stone Institute states that a poultice commonly remains in place for 24 to 48 hours. Difficult stains may require several applications, and some deep stains may not disappear completely.
Do not immediately repeat the process while the granite is still wet. Moisture from the treatment can temporarily darken the area and make it difficult to judge whether the stain improved.

Follow the sealer manufacturer’s instructions instead of relying on a universal yearly schedule. Different granite varieties absorb liquids at different rates, and some require more frequent treatment than others.
